The Pale Forest
Located in the Dragon’s Fang mountains the underground forest of fungus and vines is at once both beautiful and perplexing. The Pale Forest lays deep in the interior of the Dragon’s Fang mountain, meters under rock and mountain it is devoid of sunlight save for that which filters through meters of crystal veins from the upper and unreachable surfaces of the mountain itself. The Forest is permanently cast in a dim half light, the occasional patch of extra illumination provided by odd phospherecent fungus. The main body of the forest is located in a huge cavern, the roof of which arches high above the assorted flora and fauna and is invisible in the half light save for veins of crystal curving across its surface which filter light from outside. The cavern itself is immense, stretching some 2 miles across and is densely packed with all manner of deep dwelling fungi, plants and animals. Around the cavern and stretching out for miles is a network of natural pot holes and tunnels also filled with vegitation, the forest is indeed huge.
Everything in the forest is pale, the lack of sufficient sunlight precluding the need for broad green leaves, many plants are spined and some poisonous. Fungi of different varieties from basic edible mushrooms to deadly Night Caps and even Screaming Fungus can be found here also, the natives make use of these plants and fungi to produce potions and salves, poisons and food, even clothing. The animals range from the harmless blind vermin that rustle amongst the fungus to discoloured dire beasts and the unfortunate victims of Death Puff mushrooms.
Deep in the main cavern a clan of Elves make their home in the tops of giant fungi and amongst the the safer plants the find in the Pale Forest, these are the Pale Elves, or the Pallid as the merchants of Abian sometimes call them. Years of living below ground has made their skin a pale as a new moon, almost translucent and fragile looking. The Pale Elves however are anything but fragile, they live by their wits, surviving off the forest which they see as their home, provided them by the Dragon Ulia as their legends say. They are master trackers and hunters, as well as traders with the Free City of Abian with whom they exchange their potions and maps of the underground in return for weapons and gold.
